Why were the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed?

Q. I've just been to your web site, and thought that I should comment. For your information, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for the lack of hospitality shown by the residents and not for the sin of homosexuality. Also, there is no word for "homosexual" in the New Testament, the word "homosexual" found in the New Testament is a mistranslation.

You are incorrect in both of your assertions: The following verses should help to enlighten you:

Jude 1:7 (KJV)

"Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire."

2 Peter 2:6 (KJV)

"And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly …"

Clearly, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were condemned and destroyed for the practice of immorality (fornication, and going after "strange flesh" in the KJV) a sin consistently condemned in the Scriptures. Peter says that Sodom and Gomorrah were an "ensample" a word meaning "pattern" for those who should live "ungodly," meaning that homosexuality is the sin that set forth the example (pattern) that God will not tolerate. God will not tolerate fornication (which is a word which includes "homosexuality") or any other sexual sin.

There are two words in the New Testament that directly address this issue, they are both found in 1 Corinthians 6:9 (as well as other places), please consider the following verse:

1 Corinthians 6:9 (KJV)

"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor *effeminate (1), nor *abusers (2) of themselves with mankind …"(KJV)

1 Cor. 6:9 – effeminate = (means, according to the lexicons and translations)

malakos {mal-ak-os'} translated as in the following versions:

(nor effeminate) – KJV (in the KIV as: soft 3, effeminate 1)

(nor effeminate) – NASB

(male prostitutes) – NIV

(male prostitutes) – NRSV

(nor homosexuals) – NKJV

(nor those who make women of themselves) – Dby

The Lexicons say that the word "malakos" or "effeminate" is:

As you can clearly see, the scholars of the world agree through the centuries that "homosexuality" is included in the definition of "sexual perversion," or homosexuality. The Greek word for "fornication" includes the idea of homosexuality, therefore, anytime you find the Greek word "fornication" in a text it includes, according to the lexicons:

porneia {por-ni'-ah}

1) illicit sexual intercourse

1a) adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, intercourse with animals etc.

1b) sexual intercourse with close relatives; Lev. 18

1c) sexual intercourse with a divorced man or woman; Mk. 10:11,12

2) metaph. the worship of idols

2a) of the defilement of idolatry, as incurred by eating the sacrifices offered to idols

Romans makes this very clear:

Romans 1:26-27 (KJV)

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.

Homosexual is not a mistranslation as you assert, it is a very accurate rendering in modern English of the original Greek word.
