I'll give you 19 ways the Holy Spirit is active today!

1.) He is indwelling Christians.

When I read my New Testament I learn that people who are baptized for the remission of sins are promised the "gift of the Holy Spirit."

Acts 2:38

"Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Romans 5:5

"and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

Acts 5:32

"And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."

I believe Acts 5:32 and Romans 5:5 are very clear. Christians receive the Holy Spirit when they are obedient to God in Baptism. What is very interesting about both these passages is the verb tense which tells us when we receive the Holy Spirit. The verb in both passages is an "aorist" tense verb. This means "a point action in the past." It's a one-time-action verb. At some point in the past you received the Holy Spirit, and now He is in you. This is what the passage is actually saying. Consider the next passage.

Romans 8:9-15

9 "However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh–

13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!""

Notice carefully what is said in Romans 8:9-15 about the Spirit and the Christian:

1. Someone not something, had been given (point action in the past, aorist tense verb verse 15) to dwell in those who had become Christians. Who is that someone? He is the "Spirit of God" (verse 9), "the Spirit of Christ" (verse 9), "the Spirit of Him" (verse 11), in other words, The Holy Spirit (Acts 5:32).

When the Spirit is given to us, we become the most holy place (temple) of the Holy spirit:

1 Corinthians 6:19

"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?"

RELATED PASSAGES:

James 4:5 "Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: "He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"?"

1Thess. 4:8 "So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you."

Gal. 4:6 "Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!""

Eph. 1:13 "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation–having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,"

Eph. 4:30 "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

2 Tim. 1:14 "Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you."

Heb. 6:4 "For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,"

1 John 4:13 "By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit."

2 Cor. 1:22 "who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

2 Cor 5:5 "Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge."

2.) He is convicting the world concerning sin, righteousness and judgment.

John 16:8-15

8 ""And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;

10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;

11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

14 "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

15 "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you."

John 14:26

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."

The specific promise of the coming of the Holy Spirit to guide the Apostles into all the Truth was a promise to the Apostles only (1 Cor. 2:6-13), but helping Christians remember what the Apostles taught is still a work of the Spirit. The Spirit has revealed (Jude 3) the Word, and the Word brings to our remembrance all that Jesus taught (Acts 1:1).

Today the Holy Spirit is convicting the world of sin and righteousness and judgment. How does he do that? We cannot possibly know all the ways, but to be certain we know that the Word of God tells us what sin is, and how God is going to deal with it. We know that God calls us through His Word (2 Thess 2:14). We know that people are responding to God's Word, and turning to righteousness, and preparing themselves for the judgment to come. We know that there are people in the world who believe in a future judgment. Is this the work of the Holy Spirit? Certainly!

3.) He is providing the Christian with "living water."

John 7:37-39

37 " Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

38 "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'"

39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God."

7.) He helps the Christian in prayer.

Romans 8:26-27

"In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;

27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
