What happens when Christ returns again?

Q. What happens when Christ returns again ? I hear a lot on this subject, and I know you have covered this subject before, what do the Scriptures Say?

Let me remind you of what people were saying back in the 90’s. Let’s go back to the years BEFORE 1999, remember all of the predictions of gloom and doom that were boldly proclaimed by the self-proclaimed prophets?

U.S. psychic Criswell, predicted that extraterrestrials would suck the Earth’s oxygen away on August 18, 1999.

Jeane Dixon predicted the Antichrist would be born on Feb. 5, 1962, and that he would rise to political power in 1992. She also said that in in the spring and fall of 2000 America would be hit by massive earth quakes. There will be omens in the Spring, and extraordinary changes there after, reversals of nations and mighty earthquakes…with a great movement of the globe in October, such that one will think the Earth has lost its natural gravitational movement and that it will be plunged into the abyss of perpetual darkness.

According to New Zealander prophet, Michael Callagher,
Vice President Al Gore controls a massive computer that is the Antichrist . Callagher expects a nuclear war involving Europe, the United States and Israel to break out December 25, 1999.

The Jeovah’s Witnesses were in founded in 1872, they have had eight mistaken predictions of the end of the world (1874, 1878,1910, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975 and 1984). In 1996, The Watchtower announced they would no longer speculate on the date of the second coming.

The U.S. based Photo Belt group said that the Earth is would swing into an enormous “energy ring” shortly before 2000. When it does, all electromagnetic machines will stop. Then, after three days of blinding light, the Earth will be “purified” and the “space brothers” will land.

The Mormons anticipating the end in March 2000, by snapping up farmland worldwide which they are cultivating in anticipation of a “day of adversity.”

Psychic Ruth Montgomery predicted that the in the Spring or Summer of the Year 2000, earthquakes would cause the polar ice caps to shift dramatically with the “new” South Pole being located over South America and the “new” North Pole several hundred miles east of Tokyo. The shift will turn the Arctic Circle into a tropical paradise while South America would become as cold as Alaska overnight. The Mississippi could become the next Amazon, with lush Rainforest growth throughout Middle America. As Montgomery said, ” Many people will not survive this shift, but others will.” Because after a period of churning seas and frightful wind velocities, the turbulence will cease, and those in the north will live in a tropical clime, and vice versa.

No one knows when the Great Pyramid of Cheops was built. But what we do know is that it contains a timeline which coincides exactly with certain events that have happened over the last 2,000 years of modern history. In their book Great Pyramid Passages, John and Morton Edgar hypothesize that the lengths of the passages in the center of the Great Pyramid, measured in “Pyramid inches.” correlate so exactly to important historical events that the builders may have be able to “see” the future. Events include Christ’s crucifixion all the way to World War I and II. However, the timeline stops at May 5, 2000.

American psychic, Edgar Cayce, said that the British Isles and Western Europe will be rocked by quakes towards the Year 2000. Japan will disappear. Many portions of the East Coast will be submerged, as well as the West Coast. New York City and Connecticut will disappear along with South Carolina and Georgia. The waters of the Great Lakes will empty onto the Gulf of Mexico.

For theYear 2000, the Cayce foresaw devastating earthquakes, world war, global epidemics and the end of the world as we know it. After a series of powerful earthquakes in which California finally slides into the Pacific, Cayce predicted a world drought and horrifying epidemic that kills hundreds of millions of people, and a massive hole in the ozone layer that will open up over Europe, causing a terrifying and unprecedented plague of skin cancer killing millions more.

He said that In 1999, nuclear war would breakout in the Middle East prompting US intervention. During the war, a powerful alliance led by China would defeat the US led forces.

He predicted the Earth’s axis would shift turning the tropics frigid. On December 31, 1999, he said the world ends as a result of a nuclear holocaust with Christ returning at the End.

Nostradamus: “An earthquake will be reported from the bottom of Asia…in an unstable and troubled state… (when) Mars, Mercury and the Moon are in conjunction.” The 16th century’s Nostradamus, perhaps the best known prophet and widely read has alluded to bad things happening in 1999 in one of his quatrains: The year 1999, seventh month, A great king of terror will descend from the skies, To resuscitate the great king of Angolmois, Around this time Mars will reign for the good cause.

The first question that seems to pop up whenever this subject is broached is “when”. We all want to know when. Is it going to be today? Is it going to be tomorrow? Will it be 100 years? 1000 years?

Let me make a couple of statements about those predictions–recent or long ago. All of those predictions stem from literally a handful of verses, some of which are found in the first half of Matthew 24 which was not spoken by Jesus about the end of time but the destruction of Jerusalem (see this dicussion at ScripturesSay.com).

Some of those come from apocalyptic literature. Literature written for the Jews–filled with imagery (some in the Old Testament, some from the book of Revelation)–but most of the time, pulled out of context from verses not meant to apply to the end of time at all.

Listen to the Bible:

2 Pet. 3:10
10* But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

Listen to the words of Jesus from the last part of Matthew 24, where he does talk about the end of time in verse 36,

Matt. 24:36
36* “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

The point is when anyone informs the world that he or she has suddenly discovered the time of the Lord’s second coming, they immediately reveal themselves as a false profit. Because the day of the Lord will come like a “thief in the night”.

We don’t know when, but what is going to happen when time ends?

Let’s consider some things that are NOT going to happen:

The first thing that is NOT going to happen when Christ comes again is that he is not coming to set up a kingdom. One of the more popular theories regarding the last days is the idea that Jesus will come and establish some kind of utopian 1,000 year reign, during which time there will be peace and prosperity all across the earth. According to this theory, which is called the Millennial Theory, the temple is going to be rebuilt, temple worship will be restored, Jesus will rule from David’s throne for 1,000 years, and he will evangelize the world from that throne. (See ScripturesSay.com for a discussion on this subject).

The doctrine has its roots all the way back to C. L. Schofield and John Darby, and some others, but but it’s not found in the Bible. In fact, here is an inspired interpretation of those very prophecies. It is found in Acts 2:29-33 when Peter preached the first sermon about Christ on that Pentecost Day. I’m going to begin reading in verse 29 where Peter said,

Acts 2:29-33
29* “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
30* “And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE,
31* he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY.
32* “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.
33* “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.

Peter said that prophecy has been fulfilled. The prophecy about the coronation of Jesus occurred when he was resurrected. Right now He is seated on his throne, and the kingdom is under his charge now. All the prophecies about the kingdom reign are fulfilled in the resurrection and the ascension and the coronation of Jesus.

Col. 1:13-14
13* For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,
14* in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

1 Cor 15:20-26
20* ¶ But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.
21* For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.
22* For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
23* But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming,
24 then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power.
25* For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.
26* The last enemy that will be abolished is death.

The Apostle Paul says. Jesus is reigning over his kingdom now.

The second thing that is NOT going to happen when Jesus comes again, he is not coming to bestow special favor on the Jews. The concept is the Jews will be saved during that 1,000-year period of evangelism and they will be instruments of Christ to evangelize the rest of mankind, still lost up to that point. During that time, the Jews will supposedly come from all over the earth to their homeland of Palestine, and there, Christ (bestowing special favor on the Jews) is going to reign over all man. Frankly, that twist holds less water than the first theory. The Bible makes abundantly clear in the New Testament, it is that the time of any nation or race of people receiving special favor from God has long since past. It is never to be revived, and not to be resurrected.

When Peter was instructed by God in Acts 10 to go to Cornelius and open the doors of the kingdom to the Gentiles, Peter did as he was told (with some coaxing, I might add). But here’s the conclusion he reached in Acts 10:34-35: Then Peter began to speak:

Acts 10:34-35
34* ¶ Opening his mouth, Peter said: “I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality,
35* but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him.

Listen to the summary of the matter in Galatians 3:28-29: Paul writes,

Galatians 3:28-29
28* There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29* And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.

The time has long since past where God will bestow special favoritism on a race of people.

The third thing that is NOT going to happen when Jesus comes again, there’s not going to be a rapture. Then after the rapture, supposedly, there will come some seven-year period of tribulation, then that 1,000-year reign, and then you know the rest of it from what we have just discussed.

So, “where did that idea come from?” That concept goes all the way back to James Brooks in the latter part of the 19th century. It comes from two great passages:

I Thessalonians 4:16-18
13* ¶ But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope.
14* For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.
15* For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
16* For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
17* Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
18* Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Notice the context here.Paul speaks of the dead being raised then the living being caught up in the air. This happens at the end of time. All are given a new incorruptible body to live through eternity, but there is no indication in this passage that life goes on a usual on earth.

I Corinthians 15:51-55

51* ¶ Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,
52* in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
53* For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54* But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory.
55* “O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?”
56* The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;
57* but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is clearly at the end of time, every person on earth will know what is happening.

Philippians 2:10-11
says, “Every knee is going to bow, every tongue is going to confess.”

Matthew 25:34-46 tells us when Jesus appears again, that is going to be followed immediately by a great judgment scene, not some rapturous disappearance of the saints. That is not found in the Bible.

So, what will happen:

1- Number one, it will be a spectacular thing

I Thessalonians 4:16 says:

1 Thess. 4:16
16* For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

Every human being living on the face of the earth, whenever that day is, will hear that trumpet and our attention will be suddenly captured on a moment’s notice.

2- The second thing that’s going to occur is that the dead will be raised.

I Thessalonians 4:16 again:

16* For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

That is corroborated in I Corinthians 15:52. Listen to this,
I Corinthians 15:52
52* in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

When Jesus comes again, the graves are going to be emptied. all of those that we have known and loved, and who have gone to that grave, those bodies are going to be reunited with their souls.

3- Third – The living are going to be changed. There will be those living when Jesus comes again. Here’s what I Corinthians 15:51 says,

I Corinthians 15:51
51* ¶ Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,
52* in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
53* For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.

These first three things are all going to happen just like that. They practically will be simultaneous. A trumpet will sound and there will be the voice of the archangel, the dead will come out of the graves, and the living–at that time–will be caught in the air with them. Therefore all of humanity, from the beginning of time, will be caught up in the air with Christ.

4- And then the fourth thing, a great separation is going to take place. From Matthew 25, beginning at verse 31:

Matt. 25:31=33
31* ¶ “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.
32* “All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats;
33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.

5- After that separation, the fifth thing that will occur will be a great judgment scene. Continuing in Matthew 25:34:

Matt. 25:34
34* “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

Matt. 25:41
41* “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;

The same judgment is mentioned in Revelation 20:12:

Rev. 20:12
12* And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.

6- And after that separation and after that great judgment, the sixth (and final) thing that will occur is the destruction of this earth.

2 Pet. 3:10
10* But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

This earth is not going to continue for another 1,000 years. Jesus is not coming to set up a kingdom, he’s going to deliver the kingdom that is already his to the Father after the judgment.

The Second Coming was never intended to strike fear in our hearts:

In fact, turn in your Bibles to:

I Thessalonians 4:16-18:

16* For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
17* Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet
the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
18* Therefore comfort one another with these words.

There is great comfort in these words if your are in Christ. The Second Coming will be the greatest even in the History of the World.
