Q. I trust in God,I believe in and trust Jesus Christ, I guess I am just a currious person, because in the bible it says “before me there was no God”, it kinda gives the impression that there was a time when there was no God, I know thats not true, but can you tell me what that means?
I believe you have reference to Isaiah 43:10 which reads:
“You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me.”
Similar expressions are found in Isaiah in the following verses:
“Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me.
“I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me;
The Bible context of this statement is this: Israel had a continuing, reoccurring problem with Idolatry. Not long after Isaiah writes they are taken into Babylonian captivity for 70 years as punishment for this sin.
The expression “before Me there was no God formed” intimates (in its context) that idols were formed by the hands of men, yet not of these were formed before HIM, and therefore could make no claims to deity, or to an equality with HIM, and none would be formed after HIM with such attributes as they had witnessed by HIS hand.
This was simply God’s reminder to Israel that none of the “gods” of their own invention had ever worked the wonders among his people that THE LORD GOD had worked among them.
That’s why “I am the first and the last, and there is no God besides Me,” and “Besides Me there is no God” are also both TRUE statements.
