The number 666 is mentioned many times in Revelation. What or who does it mean?

Q. I’ve heard many explications of the number 666 in the book of Revelation. My father came up with a formula that it was Hitler. I saw a TV program that said it was Charles, Prince of Wales. What does it really mean? Who is it?

There have probably been thousands of attempts to remove the number 666 from it’s Biblical context and give an explanation.

What must be remembered is that the book of Revelation was written in symbolic language. It was never intended by God to be interpreted literally. When people try to use passages out of a symbolic context to prove a point, or “twist” a symbol to explain their own preconceived ideas, they sin and distort the text.

I’m going to give you a very simple explanation of the entire book of revelation, here it is:

There is a great spiritual battle going on between Christ and Satan. All mankind is involved in this battle. You are either on Satan’s side or Christ’s side. Christ wins the battle. Those who are members of His body, the church of Christ win with Him.

That’s the message of the book.

In symbolic language God records the spiritual battle. Those who were the original recipients of the book (Revelation 1:1-3) knew firsthand of the battle. The book was written to instruct and comfort them.

If you keep these thoughts Revelation can be an exciting study.

666 may stand for man’s imperfection.
