Is it a sin to live together before marriage?

Q. Is it wrong for people to live together who are not married? This is so common today that hardly anyone even notices. We have several older couples who tell me that they would lose benefits if they got married, and in the eyes of God they are married anyway even if they have not had a formal ceremony, is this wrong?

Let’s first turn to the Scriptures:

Matt. 19:4-10 4* And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, 5* and said, ‘FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH’? 6* “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” 7* They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?” 8* He *said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. 9* “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.” 10* The disciples *said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.”

I want you to notice that the disciples immediately got the point. Marriage is serious business in the eyes of God.

In verse four above our Lord says, “from the beginning” God created man and woman and intended that there be one man for one woman for life. The only way for people to “live-together” with God’s approval is in a God blessed marriage.

Consider what the apostle Paul says in 1 Cor. 6:15

15* Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be! 16* Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.” 17* But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18* Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. 19* Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20* For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

One who is “joined” to a harlot becomes one flesh with her, but NOT WITH GOD’s APPROVAL. We are to “FLEE” immorality. Don’t walk…..RUN!

Heb. 13:4 says:
“Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”

The question is, do your friends want to be right with God…….or do they want a pay check?

One last verse:

1 Cor. 6:9-10
9* Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10* nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
