Q. I understand that you did not grow up in a religious home. How did you come to accept the Bible as the inspired Word of God?
Introduction: I did not grow up in the church. I did not grow up listening to Bible stories. I did not grow up in a religious family. I came to the Bible with a great deal of skepticism, in fact the only reason I began to study the Bible was to prove it to be false.
As I studied the Bible to prove it false, something happened. I began to discover that it was not possible for the Bible to have been the product of man’s imagination. It contained a number of “evidences” in the form of information that would have been impossible for man to have knowledge of at the time of the writing, and the more I studied the more I was convinced of it’s inspiration. I want to tell you the reasons I believe the Bible is the inspired word of God.
1) I believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God because of the evidence contained within the Bible. The Bible contains knowledge that mere human beings could not have possessed at the time of the writing of the various books.
We have many evidences, from many fields of study which prove the inspiration of the Scriptures:
Astronomy: **The earth is Spherical — Solomon wrote about 1000 B.C.: Proverbs 8:27 27 “When He established the heavens, I was there, When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,
Quite a thought for his time. It was not until the 16th century that man discovered the truth of Solomon’s statement. **The earth revolves daily – (2000 B.C.) –
Job 38:12-14 12 “Have you ever in your life commanded the morning, And caused the dawn to know its place, 13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it? 14 “It is changed like clay under the seal; And they stand forth like a garment.
Proven true 1851 A.D. **The earth is not supported – (2000 B.C.) – Job 26:7 7 “He stretches out the north over empty space And hangs the earth on nothing.
Proven true 1687 A.D.
**The Universe is a continuously spreading expanse – Gen. 1:8 8 God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day. Jer. 31:37 – 37 Thus says the LORD, “If the heavens above can be measured And the foundations of the earth searched out below, Then I will also cast off all the offspring of Israel For all that they have done,” declares the LORD.
Proven true 1950 A.D.
**The stars are innumerable – (600 B.C.) Jer. 33:22 22 ‘As the host of heaven cannot be counted and the sand of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the descendants of David My servant and the Levites who minister to Me.'”
Heb. 11:12 (60 A.D.) –
12* Therefore there was born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants AS THE STARS OF HEAVEN IN NUMBER, AND INNUMERABLE AS THE SAND WHICH IS BY THE SEASHORE.
Proven true 1924 A.D. **The stars emit sound – Job 38:7 (2000 B.C.) – 7 When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Proven true 1940 A.D. **The heavens are controlled by ordinances –
Job 38:33 (2000 B.C.) 33 “Do you know the ordinances of the heavens, Or fix their rule over the earth?
Psalm 19:4 4 Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their utterances to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun,
Prov. 8:28;(1000 B.C.) 28 When He made firm the skies above, When the springs of the deep became fixed,
Jer. 31:35 (600 B.C.) – 35 Thus says the LORD, Who gives the sun for light by day And the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, Who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar; The LORD of hosts is His name:
Proven true 1687 A.D.
**There are many Suns – Gen. 1:16-17 (1450 B.C.) – 16* God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. 17 God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.
